Bald Mountain - Weld, Maine

Bald Mountain is one of my favorite hikes. Actually there are 8 Bald Mountains in Maine! This one is a short hike - just 3 miles, but very steep - 2370 feet, 1400 vertical rise.

Once you find the trailhead from the road (not an easy task) you start out by crossing a brook.

Then you hike through a mixed hardwood forest. Check out the tree roots on the rock.

Finally you emerge above the timberline into scrub then onto the bald ledges.

The view at the top is breath-taking from every direction. Behind me you can see Lake Webb, Tumbledown, The Jacksons, and Blueberry Mountain.

Mount Blue is to the north.

We picked wild cranberries, and blueberries. Its hard to pick with Emily around because she likes to eat them too.

Moxie Falls, Maine

My favorite scenic drive in the Fall is heading north on Route 201 from Skowhegan. You can drive all the way to the Canadian Border and then onto Quebec.


The road follows along the beautiful Kennebec River.

This is not far from where Judy & I have our kayak adventures.

Here's where we had a picnic. The leaves were sparkling on the hillsides.

The Forks where the Kennebec and Dead Rivers meet, is a popular whitewater rafting spot.

A few miles west of The Forks is Moxie Falls. The Falls are just a short hike (or so they say) through the woods. The freshly fallen leaves smelled wonderful.

Moxie Falls is 90 feet - one of the tallest waterfalls in New England.

A fall weekend

Judy came to visit for the weekend.

We went leaf peeping.

It started out sunny, but after awhile we wondered if we'd get caught in the rain.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch at Riverside Farm Market in Oakland, Maine.

Judy found a jar of old buttons at Kozy Korner in Oakland, Maine.

October is the month for cooking with pumpkins and apples.

Coastal Maine Botanical Garden – Boothbay, Maine

One of my favorite places to visit is the new Coastal Maine Botanical Garden which opened in June 2007.

One of the most beautiful areas of the garden is the Shoreland Trail with views of the Back River.

Purple monkshood, aconitum, were in full bloom, overlooking the peaceful Slater Forest Pond.

Meandering through the woods and over the wooden foot bridge, you discover the Fern Garden and in the spring, can see lots of Lady Slippers.

There‘s lots for children to do
They can build a fairy castle in the woods.

I definitely have to come back next spring and see the Rhododendron Garden in bloom. It is located on a hillside, overlooking a pond and waterfall.

October's Party - George Cooper

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came
The chestnuts, oaks, and maples,
And leaves of every name.

The sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.

Harvest time in my Vegetable Garden

Here's how my garden looked earlier in the summer. I love going out and picking the veggies for my ‘salad’. I grow 3 varieties of lettuce, spinach, mesclun mix, 2 varieties of cucumbers, 5 varieties of cherry tomatoes, plum, and heirloom tomatoes.

This time of year there's lots of tomatoes. Here's a fresh veggie tomato sauce Cyndy made.

I’ve learned how to can, and ‘put by’ for the winter. Its wonderful to cook with a jar of home-made tomato sauce and remember the taste of summer.

It was a banner pepper year!

One of the new things I tried to grow this year was 'Jack Be Little Pumpkins'. Look how cute they look on my window sill.

Let's hope for a few more weeks without a frost. It has already gotten down in the 30's at night.
